The Mercedes-amg is not your usual Benz, and here’s why

By Bruce Powers

As a specialist in Mercedes-Benz auto repairs in Huntington Beach, we can tell budding Benz aficionados tell one thing: that the AMG Mercedes-Benz vehicles surpass the brand’s non-AMG models.

U.S. News lists the Mercedes-Benz E-Class on the number one spot of their Best Luxury Midsize Cars for 2021. With a score of 8.7, the magazine cites its luxurious cabin, smooth driving experience, and “muscular” engine options as the main factors for its desirability.

The E-Class comes with three engine types: a four-cylinder turbo, a six-cylinder hybrid, and the high-performance AMG E 63 S. The AMG engine impresses with a twin-turbo V8 that can generate over 600 horsepower and goes 0-to-60 in just 3.3 to 4.4 seconds.

The Mercedes-Benz E-Class is just one example of how AMG engineering can give a base vehicle an even greater boost in speed and performance.

The AMG label is a mark of excellence not just among the Benz vehicles but luxury cars in general.

AMG (Aufecht, Melcher, and Großaspach) is a division of the company that produces high-performance Mercedes-Benzes that boast advanced engines, aerodynamic designs, and high accelerations and speeds. In a nutshell, the AMG arm makes cars that are similar to but better performing than the standard Benz models.

What Mercedes AMG does is impressive: they make sure that increasing the engine’s horsepower will not compromise driver comfort, the car’s aesthetics, and other elements that are notable in the standard Benz vehicles.

Thanks to the extensive research and advanced tech integrated into these cars, AMG Benzes can satisfy discerning car buyers who want top-level performance to go with the styling, which likely drew their eyes first.

All Mercedes vehicles have a “base” model. These units are always available in the U.S. They have the standard amenities and distinct features of that specific model, I.e., a unique external design or a driving feature. The base models are sold at the suggested retail prices indicated in marketing materials.

To satisfy the varying preferences of car buyers, manufacturers often produce higher-trim options with upgraded or improved features (most of which are performance-focused, like more engine cylinders, bigger fuel capacities, higher horsepower values, and the like). The highest trim level for Mercedes cars is always the AMG version.

The AMG treatment is often applied to the following:

  • Wheels
  • Body panel
  • Power
  • Safety features
  • Interiors

With the AMG being a premium stamp, the price of the model naturally increases as higher-level components and features are engineered into the vehicle. This also means that it’s not just the car the “levels up” but also the target market.
